Shore Excursions from Naples Port: A Local Guide for Cruise Passengers

You dock in the city centre with a few hours to spare: what is realistic, what is risky and how to be back on board in time.

Shore excursions from Naples port: start here

Planning shore excursions from Naples port starts with one useful fact: you dock right in the city centre. Cruise ships tie up at the Stazione Marittima on Molo Angioino, next to the Castel Nuovo castle and the Molo Beverello ferry pier. Within a few minutes’ walk you are in central Naples, and within about 30 to 90 minutes by road you can be at Pompeii, Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast.

The real question is not what to see, but how much you can see safely in the hours you have. Here is how the main options compare.

How much time you really have

Your cruise line sets an all-aboard time, usually some time before departure, and that is your real deadline, not the sailing time. Add the time it takes to get off the ship, and aim to be back at the terminal at least an hour before all-aboard. Traffic in Naples and on the coast road is unpredictable, especially on summer weekends.

As an example, a ship in port from 8:00 to 18:00 with all-aboard at 17:30 gives you a realistic touring window of roughly 8:30 to 16:30. That is plenty for Pompeii, comfortable for Pompeii and Sorrento, and enough for the Amalfi Coast only with careful planning.

Option 1: Naples on foot

The simplest excursion is the city itself. From the terminal you can walk to Piazza del Plebiscito, the Galleria Umberto I and the Royal Palace, then up into the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Spaccanapoli, its churches, its underground passages and, of course, pizza. The National Archaeological Museum, home to many treasures from Pompeii, is a short metro or taxi ride away.

It costs little, carries no transport risk and is a good choice for a short port call. Keep valuables out of sight in crowded streets, as in any big city.

Option 2: Pompeii, with Vesuvius or Herculaneum

Pompeii is the most popular excursion from Naples, about 30 to 45 minutes by road. On your own, you can take the Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Garibaldi or Porta Nolana to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri, although trains are crowded and you need to reach the station from the port first. Book Pompeii tickets in advance on the official website.

With a car, Pompeii combines well with Vesuvius, weather permitting, or with Herculaneum, which is smaller and closer to Naples. Allow about three hours at Pompeii and two at Herculaneum.

Option 3: the Amalfi Coast or Sorrento

The Amalfi Coast is the most ambitious shore excursion. Positano is about an hour and a half from the port in normal traffic and Amalfi is further, so it fills the whole day. A realistic plan is Positano and Amalfi, adding Ravello only on a long port call. By public transport it is not realistic in a single port day, and seasonal ferries from Molo Beverello have limited timings that may not match your ship.

A shorter and very pleasant alternative is Sorrento with Pompeii: less time on the road, a walk in Sorrento’s old town, a lemon grove or lunch with a view of the bay, and the ruins on the way back. This is the classic choice when you want both history and coastline.

Option 4: Capri

Fast ferries and hydrofoils to Capri leave from Molo Beverello, right next to the cruise terminal, and the crossing takes about 50 minutes. Some sailings, including the slower car ferries, leave from Calata Porta di Massa, a little further along the port, so check the departure point on your ticket. Capri is beautiful but crowded in high season, with queues for the funicular and the boats to the Blue Grotto, which only runs in calm sea.

The return ferry is your critical link: choose one that leaves a generous margin before all-aboard, because a sold-out or cancelled sailing leaves you with few alternatives.

Which shore excursion suits you?

There is no single best choice from Naples. It depends on how long your ship stays, how much walking you enjoy and whether you have been to the area before. A few rules of thumb from the road:

  • Short call of five or six hours: Naples on foot, or Pompeii with a quick return.
  • First visit and a full day: Pompeii with Sorrento, or the Amalfi Coast if you love views more than ruins.
  • History lovers: Pompeii and Herculaneum, or Pompeii and the National Archaeological Museum.
  • Families with children or reduced mobility: a private car, so the day follows your pace and not a group’s.
  • Second visit: Capri, or a quieter route such as Ravello.

Ship excursion or independent tour?

Excursions sold by the cruise line handle all the logistics, and cruise lines generally say the ship will wait if one of their own tours is delayed. They tend to run in large groups with a fixed pace. An independent private tour gives you a small group, your own pace and a route built around your interests, often good value for families, but responsibility for timing is shared with your operator.

If you go independent, choose a local driver who plans a generous buffer and knows the traffic, and send the ship name, docking day and all-aboard time when you book.

  • Carry your cruise card and a photo ID.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: Pompeii and Positano mean uneven stone and stairs.
  • Bring a card and some cash for small purchases.
  • Keep your phone charged so you can reach your driver on WhatsApp.

Questions travellers ask

Where do cruise ships dock in Naples?

At the Stazione Marittima on Molo Angioino, in the city centre next to Castel Nuovo and the Molo Beverello ferry pier.

Can I visit the Amalfi Coast on a port day in Naples?

Yes, if your ship stays most of the day. Positano is about an hour and a half away by road, so a private driver or an organised tour is the realistic way to do it.

Is Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast better for a shore excursion?

Pompeii is closer and less time-sensitive. The Amalfi Coast is spectacular but takes the whole day. Sorrento with Pompeii is a good compromise.

Will my ship wait if my private tour is late?

Cruise lines generally only guarantee to wait for their own excursions. With an independent tour, plan to be back at least an hour before all-aboard.

Can I walk from the cruise terminal to the Capri ferries?

Yes. Molo Beverello is right next to the cruise terminal, a few minutes on foot. Some Capri sailings leave from Calata Porta di Massa, a longer walk along the port, so check your ticket.
